Re: More Fed/Treasury Shenanigans

At 300 sq. ft for 4 rooms = average 75 sq. ft. per room (approx. 8-1/2 by 8-1/2 rooms). A typical jail cell is what - 6 by 10? Maybe that's why you don't consume as much - no where to put things. 300 sq. ft. - Sheesh.

Tragedy

Bill, I'm so sorry to hear the tragic news. Have been away from my computer all day and am truly shocked when this kind of news occurs.

Re: Oracle buys Sun

As I understand it, Enterprise software (Oracle's business) often requires changes to computer platform software (Sun's business). By owning both pieces, Oracle would be able to sell seamless product. No other company in their field can do this. Competitive advantage.

Re: Baltic Dry Index (Ocean Transport is on Fire today)

Corner Stone, I’m not an expert but here’s what I can tell you. For the right perspective consider the BDI was in the $20,000+ range a year ago. After the first of the year where my data collection starts (BDI = $911), the BDI was rising at about $200 per week. From 2/2 to 2/11 it jumped from $1000 to $2055 (9 days!!). It’s not at all clear to me what stimulated that move (general good feeling preceding the inauguration?), but from there it took small dips and rises at an average net rise of $200 per week again until it peaked on 3/10 at $2298 (exactly the inverse of the DJ by the way). Then it started its decline until 4/8 at 1463 (again the inverse of DJ). This downward dip coincides with a general decline in commodity demand in China and other countries. As we see the BDI turn slightly upward, we’re hearing of higher demand for copper in China for example. I have not tried to correlate the BDI with copper, gold, iron ore, spot prices etc., nor have I tried to correlate the BDI with say DRYS, GNK, DSX, PRGN, EXM or NM, as many things outside demand will impact the stock prices, e.g., DRYS resolution of debt issues re ship building. For Dry Bulk Shipping all I can do is track the BDI index, read Fearnleys, etc. What one really needs to know day by day is what’s going on with the supply/demand for ores in the BRIC countries primarily. Hope this helps some, DYODD.

Re: Baltic Dry Index (Ocean Transport is on Fire today)

Range bound? My guess would be more like 1500 to 3000. I’ve charted it daily since 1/13/2009. It’s very possible this is a turning point, particularly if you believe China has adopted a policy of moving toward a commodity based standard. According to other recent observations written here, China is buying copper big time and likely will turn to gold in the future. Apparently they’re buying more copper than they can use in construction alone. If that is true it’ll get to China via Dry Bulk Shipping.

Re: chicken and others...a car question real quick

Ford uses a solenoid to direct the valves to open/close dependent upon which gear you'd like to be in. A sticking solenoid results in a delay between the time you select a gear and the time the selected valve opens. And if you've got your foot on the accelerator when the valve finally opens, the tranny SLAMS into gear rather then eases into gear.

Re: chicken and others...a car question real quick

Is the clunking noise accompanied by a resounding jerk when it goes into gear? If so, I'd consider a tranny solenoid and/or tranny fluid issue based on my experience, albeit with a Ford, not Toyota.

To all Dems, Reps & Independents alike. It's not necessary to put up with this fraud forever, although it will take time and elections to effect positive change for the betterment of all citizens. Re: Opera browser

Have you tried Google Chrome? I just switched after Korvus suggested to try it. What a world of difference! Takes a little practice to get used to it. I know nothing about Opera - never tried it.

Re: Computerized Medical Records

What a shame. Failure to back up a hard drive is the height of ignorance (or laziness or discipline or all the above). Large scale businesses can afford to record data simultaneously on two or more drives in real time - no excuse for inability to service their customers - same with the library. I back up my daily files every evening and my entire computer every weekend. It's not a question of whether your HD will fail, it's only a question of when.

Gold Sector M&A's

Seeking Alpha reports today: "The gold sector could see a flurry of takeover activity in the coming months, according to Genuity Capital Markets analysts Tony Lesiak, Christine Healy and Michael Gray. With that backdrop, they have broken down a number of potential targets."

Any thoughts from Bill, Kaimu, Dr Cosa and others?

Re: Queen Pelosi

Couldn't agree more. And another thing that must change is us voters need to wake up, see through the BS during campaigns, and vote for new blood, not just silver tongued foxes. We are part of the problem too.

Lots of opportunity out there today

Feels like a mosquito in a nudist colony!

Bought DRYS at 4.36, had I waited, low was 3.86 - ouch! Will be a bit more patient and look for more.

BDI at 2055

Baltic Dry Index is up for 16th straight day. Signs of a recovery in the shipping industry are premature, but it'd a whale of in industry to trade in. Cautiously!

No position right now.

Banks that don't want bailout money

I wonder how likely their real motivation is they don't want any govt oversight that would prevent them from handing out whatever bonuses they want to. Hm-m-m.
